Location: Technical Services- Swartfontein
Grade: D5
Reporting Line: Senior Manager: Technical Services & Support
Role Mandate
To formulate of forest engineering strategies and policies and the development of medium to long term appropriate harvesting capacities.

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop harvesting strategy and supporting policies
  • Determine future harvesting systems requirements by developing 5-year tactical plans
  • Assist with the developing of new strategies for international expansion and other projects
  • Develop new management systems for the group
  • Present strategic proposals to EXCO, Finco and the Board
  • Participate in strategic planning for the group
  • Determine, select and purchase harvesting systems and machines
  • Allocate harvesting systems and machines to the most suitable plantations to ensure best utilisation at lowest cost
  • Determine the number and type of contractor capacity required
  • Set production targets as well as costing thresholds
  • Manage operational capacity utilisation and productivity
  • Assist with setting and validation of CAPEX budget and expenditure
  • Develop and establish structures and operational methods, control protocols and tools
  • Establish mechanised harvesting operations in a green field's environment
  • Continuously manage productivity
  • Benchmark and expand Mechanised operations
  • Determine most appropriate strategy for the maintenance of the harvesting equipment
  • Participate in the Development and implementation of the relevant harvesting equipment maintenance policies
  • Assist in developing and implementation of the appropriate service level agreements
  • Manage holistic harvesting equipment maintenance with specific focus on appropriateness, value for money, quality and warranties
  • Set Company specific norms and benchmarks
  • Set, manage quality standards (e.g. BOP) and cconduct internal Forest Engineering audits
  • Set annual high level harvesting budget
  • Assist in negotiating cost with service providers Conduct general quality control and operational support of harvesting operations
  • Solve any FE related problems and drive and validate FE innovations
  • Drive harvesting productivity and technology transfer
  • Represent SAFCOL on various national organisations and industry forums
  • Set national standards and academic study material through the development of academic literature and industry guidelines and norms
  • Conduct international and national FE benchmarking
  • Represent SAFCOL on FESA

Qualifications & Experience

  • Grade 12
  • Post graduate Degree (NQF Level 8) in Forest Engineering
  • M.Sc. Degree (NQF Level 9) in Forestry - specialising in Forest Engineering will be advantageous
  • 5-10 years' experience in harvesting operations or specialized harvesting system
  • Valid driver's license
